Your Mental Health Is in Your Hands – Here’s How
The World Health Organization (WHO) established October 10th as World Mental Health Day to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilize efforts for prevention, treatment, and support. At Cross Border Xpress, we are proud to join this cause. To shed light on this important topic, we have invited an expert: Adriana Reid, founder and CEO of Be2Be-Coaching. Adriana is a business consultant specializing in emotional self-sufficiency. With over 30 years of interdisciplinary experience working with diverse groups—such as war veterans, crime victims, diplomats, migrants, and teams from renowned institutions and corporations—Adriana will share her insights on why mental health is a fundamental pillar of overall well-being. She will discuss the importance of taking control of our emotional health and how small daily actions can significantly enhance our quality of life.
Whether this is your first encounter with this statement, or you’ve been on your self-discovery journey for some time, I invite you to give this some thought.
When we think about health, we often focus on physical well-being. However, we are more than just a body; we are also mental, emotional, and spiritual beings. Achieving holistic health requires balance and attention to each of these four levels of existence, as they are deeply interconnected. Most importantly, it’s in your hands.
Here are some small daily actions for each level of your being that can help transform your quality of life:
Nutrition and Exercise: Your Physical Body
Under normal conditions, the human body can regenerate itself with the right diet and regular exercise. Today, overwhelming information about diets and physical activities can be confusing. What’s key is finding what works for you. Here are a few simple tips:
- • Prioritize fresh, local food whenever possible.
- • Stay hydrated throughout the day.
- • Increase blood flow by raising your heart rate.
- • Improve flexibility through stretching.
- • Strengthen your bone stability by practicing balance.
Choose a routine that fits your way of life, as consistency is fundamental to improving your overall well-being.
Train Your Mind: Your Mental Health
Just like our body, our mind can also be trained. Our brain is a multifunctional organ whose primary job is to keep us alive, not necessarily happy. It will protect us from anything we perceive as dangerous, harmful, or unsafe.
Learn to question your thoughts—most originate from your subconscious mind, which acts like a large database. Our brain doesn’t start from scratch; it collects data from our experiences through our senses and cross-references it with our stored beliefs.
These thoughts can sometimes be limiting or cause unnecessary stress. Learning to observe our thoughts in the present moment allows us to create space between circumstances and our reactions. A useful tool for this is mindfulness. You can regain clarity and choose what’s best for you through silence and reflection.
Managing Your Emotional State: Emotions
Our emotions serve as a vital pillar of our well-being. Our instinctive survival response operates through autopilot (fight, flight, or freeze), functioning as our primary defense mechanism to ensure safety. While this response can be beneficial, it may also become distorted, leaving us in a constant state of alert even when no real threat exists. This is where perspective becomes essential.
While we can’t always control what happens around us, we can change how we interpret and react to it. The first step is to reframe an emotion: an emotion doesn’t define who you are; it reflects what’s happening.
Instead of saying, “I am sad,” try saying, “Sadness is happening through me.” This shift in focus is a process that requires courage, and the reward is reconnecting with the love that we inherently are—the love our inner being has sought from the outside world since childhood: validation, approval, and recognition.
Connecting to the Intangible: Spiritual Being
The spiritual dimension is often associated with religious or philosophical practices, but it extends far beyond that. It involves developing a relationship with our essential nature and integrating our "being" into our "doing." This spiritual connection fosters peace and wisdom, reminding us as part of something greater. By nurturing this dimension, we cultivate well-being that transcends our physical and mental dimensions.
The Art of Living
Both artists and high-performance athletes share essential qualities: discipline, patience, and conviction. They understand that success stems from consistency and conscious effort. They live with purpose and passion, achieving exceptional levels of well-being.
I invite you to become the artisan of your own life. Live with discipline, focus, and purpose. This will enable you to achieve holistic well-being.
